Is Your Medicare at Risk?
New CBO Report Sounds the Alarm on Massive Cuts
The healthcare safety net that millions of seniors depend on—Medicare—is once again facing serious threats. And this time, the warning is coming from one of the most trusted, nonpartisan sources in Washington: the Congressional Budget Office (CBO).
What’s Happening?
In a recent report, the CBO analyzed the long-term financial effects of the Republican-backed budget and tax bill currently under debate in Congress. Buried deep in the numbers is a startling projection: over $500 billion in automatic Medicare cuts if the bill becomes law.
According to the CBO:
$45 billion in Medicare cuts are expected in 2026
An additional $490 billion in cuts projected between 2027 and 2034
These reductions aren’t hypothetical. Under current budget rules, if legislation increases the deficit, automatic spending cuts—known as sequestration—kick in to balance the books. Medicare is on the chopping block.
Broken Promises?
For many seniors and their families, this news may come as a shock. Former President Donald Trump and other Republican leaders have publicly promised to protect Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security. As recently as March, the White House assured Americans these vital programs would remain untouched.
Yet, the fine print in this bill tells a different story.
Who Could Be Affected?
The potential impact is widespread:
Lower provider reimbursements may discourage doctors and hospitals from accepting Medicare patients.
Longer wait times and limited provider networks could make accessing care more difficult.
Reduced benefits may affect both Medicare Advantage and traditional Medicare users.
These changes would especially hurt older adults, people with disabilities, and others who rely on Medicare for essential treatments and peace of mind.
What’s Next?
Some lawmakers—particularly those from retiree-heavy districts—may oppose the cuts. With a narrow margin in the House, even a small group of dissenters could prevent the bill’s passage.
In the meantime, now is the time to stay informed and raise your voice. Contact your representatives and urge them to protect Medicare from harmful budget triggers.
